2008 Fundraising
The second annual bike ride in aid of the trust raised a staggering £5000. About 18 runners and riders took part in the 65 mile ride from Cambridge to Brockdish (a small village in Norfolk and home to Laura's parents). Everyone from the super speedy to the sort of slow finished, and had a ball in the process.
Karen Stacey and friends (Laura Sellers, Roisin Begley, Michelle Godley) ran the Birmingham half marathon in October to raise money for Kampala's main hospital – Mulago – though The Laura Case Trust.
Inspired by their medical electives in Uganda, they raised money for very basic equipment like mosquito nets and blood pressure cuffs which Karen describes as 'like gold dust' in Mulago. We are very pleased to have linked up with them on their endeavor.
Many thanks to Kevin Ebbins who took part in the Robin Hood marathon in Nottinghamshire for the Trust, raising £400.
Thanks to Zoe Best and the market research company she works for, 'Illuminas', for their donation to the Trust, which came from selling off old equipment. Not any old equipment either – as part of their research into use of mobile phones while walking, they had purchased several treadmills and vibrating plates. Once their project was over, instead of setting up a mini gym in their work basement, they sold the equipment to raise money for the Trust. Through the Trust, their unwanted equipment will directly contribute to much needed equipment and skills in the developing world. A great idea – do let us know if you can persuade your work to sell off any vibrating plates they might have lying around!
We didn't have much of a Summer here in the UK, but what summer we had was put to good use by Alice, Brian and Sandra Foster and their family, who organised a charity lunch in their garden in aid of the trust. A delicious spread was set out under the commemorative oar of the boat that both Laura and Alice rowed in at Cambridge and was much enjoyed by all.
20 days cycling and 1058 miles later, Daisy Hutchison and Theo Solley made it from Lands End to John O'Groats, raising a fantastic £3,900 for The Laura Case Trust. A fantastic achievement, and made even more impressive by the fact that they got married a month later. The most extreme pre–wedding weight loss regime ever... Many thanks and congratulations to them both.
Pictures from their trip can be found here and an exclusive Justgiving interview with them can be found here.
Stockholm is not somewhere you associate with 30 degree
heat, which is presumably why four of Laura's friends – Verity, Viccie, Vickie and Jamie – chose
it as a cool city to run their very first marathons, in aid of the Laura
Case Trust. Unfortunately for them, but very fortunately for the pink t–shirted
spectators and cheerleaders that went out with them, it was very very hot.
Despite that, all four finished in good time – Viccie Eyre-Brook coming an impressive second out of all the GB women in the race. The spectators also had a wonderful time – as
the pictures demonstrate!
Most importantly thought, between the four of them, the runners raised
an incredible £13, 450 (including giftaid) which is very exciting, given
the amount of good
ideas that have been coming the Trust's way recently.
Probably the most creative fundraiser to date, we have to thank The Lord Chancellor's Folk – a morris dancing troupe that has its roots in the basement of a building in Whitehall – for making the Trust their charity of choice. We must be the only charity with our very own morris dancers and their light feet and wonderful music have raised over £300 for the Trust. Catch them at a Summer fayre near you soon...

In May, Angela Bourke, a doctor and Laura's friend who was with her on her elective in Uganda, organised a cracking shindig in North London. Dancing, booze, bands and raffles were the order of the day – Laura would certainly have approved. In all, Angela raised an impressive £4350 for the Trust. Everyone clearly had a very very good time!
On a cold January Sunday, Will Edge was the Trust's very own Tough Guy. A cold, wet and muddy race and obstacle course near Wolverhampton saw Will raise £4300 (including giftaid) for the Trust.
See the pictures here if want to see the full extent of his low and muddy fooling around.
